Bienvenidos Babes
Welcome to my first installment of Treat Yo’ Self! (If you didn’t already guess, this page is inspired by Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford of Parks and Recreation, which is the greatest show in the history of creation and you should watch it).
But anyway, I’m here to give you some tips on how to treat yourself to some relaxing spa care without the horrible prices! By the way, this all comes from my own experiences because I’m broke and love treating myself.
Tip #1: The Sound of Music
In order to truly relax, you need the right setting. Let’s face it, you’re not going to feel very relaxed if all you hear is car horns through your window (#NYClife). Find some instrumental music with a slow, consistent rhythm that will make you forget about everything. Here are some options for you to choose from: x x x x x
I also recommend that you light a candle (or 10 as I prefer), or if you don’t have any just put yourself in a room with low lighting. Bright lights stimulate activity and energy, which is not something you want here.
Tip #2: The Twin Towe-ls
Whenever I get a massage, the masseuse almost always rolls up a hot towel underneath my neck and it is literally my favorite part of the experience and I have no idea why. So to get this effect, wet a cloth towel (no paper, be environmentally conscious people), put it on a plate, and stick that in the microwave for about a minute. That should get it nice and steamy.
You might want to put it in a container or something to prevent it from cooling off while you’re getting ready.
You can also make two of these and use the extra one to wipe off your face after you apply the face mask! It’s warm and a great way to end a spa session.
Tip #3: The Mask
The last step on this self-indulgent journey is to prepare the face mask, which is … honey!!
The product of the most amazing creature on this earth (no, not me) is actually great for your skin! You see, honey is humectant, meaning that it attracts and keeps moisture inside your skin. It also has lots of antioxidants that can help protect your skin from UV sunlight. Just one more reason that bees are amazing and adorable.
The first thing you need to do is take everything off your face: makeup, lotion, etc… You can even take a hot bath or shower and let the steam open your pores first.
Then comes the making of the mask. Honey is a thick substance, so it is important that you heat it up first. A cool trick to do this is to put 2 tbsp (a little goes a long way) inside a bowl or cup and then immerse that in hot water. If you just straight up put it in the microwave, it could get too hot or even get burned. Then when it’s nice and warm, lather it over your face with a brush or spatula and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. You can even slice up some cucumbers or put cool tea bags (black, green, or chamomile) over your eyes if you want to be extra fancy and relaxed (These things can actually help alleviate bags under your eyes!). After that just wash it off and apply a nice moisturizer to lock in all that healthy goodness.
Now, that’s all fine and dandy if you want to be relaxed and don’t want to put in any extra effort. However, for those of you who want to live life to the fullest, there are some awesome recipes for honey masks out there!
Some simple ones are honey combined with random stuff you can find in your kitchen: banana, heavy cream, milk, lemon juice, orange juice, egg (if you’re brave), parsley, strawberries, etc… Just mash or mix in your ingredient with the honey and proceed as usual.
If you’re really ambitious, you can go here and get even more recipes for your honey mask. Or you can just do you and create a new one yourself like the rebel you are.
My personal favorite is a lavender honey mask that I found here because I have combination skin (which means that my genetics hate me and I have both dry skin and get pimples). And also the blog I just linked has great recipes for all types of skin so go check it out!
And that’s how you treat yo’ self with stuff in your kitchen! If you do this, please remember to use raw or organic honey because you don’t need a bunch of extra ingredients in your skin.
On a related topic please protect bees because they are endangered and super important to our ecosystem! Go here and here to learn about some things you can do to help them.
